Bexley's Advanced Technology Ambassadors

3D Printing Ambassador

HW Audio

Bexley ambassador HW Audio is a Bexley business that works with some of the best sound engineers in the country to provide custom made in ear monitors for a huge variety of musicians. As a company always looking to innovate and improve, HW Audio is no different and for the first time, they have developed a 3D printed universal version there custom made in ear monitors

Industry:

Custom in-ear monitors, manufacturing, high end audio retail

Background:

Hear Wave was founded in 2011 after 3 years of research finally paid off by securing private investment, at the start we mainly hand crafted custom hearing protection made from a 2-part silicone compound for security, motorcyclists and factory workers, whilst making these products we were working alongside some of the UK’s best sound engineers to develop the custom in-ear monitors we manufacture today.

Technology:

Today we use a mixture of hand crafting and 3D printing to manufacture our in-ear monitors, manually sculpting will be replaced by a process of digitally scanning ears and making the needed adjustments in computer aided design before sending them to be 3D printed in house.

How has tech added value to your business?

The process of handcrafted in ear monitors can take up to 6 hours per unit to make, with the help of the 3D modelling software the process can now be automated within a matter of minutes and enables us to have a finished product ready to ship within a couple of hours.

We have also saved thousands of pounds on research & development from 3D printing prototypes right here in the UK without having to make large minimum order quantities from suppliers.

How do you see yourself growing and developing?

The plan is to expand worldwide! Logistics was always a timely and costly issue when connecting with customers in other countries, relying on postal services sometimes taking over a week to deliver a customer’s ear impressions, now the scans of ears can be uploaded when purchasing or emailed to us from almost every audiologist in the world in a matter of seconds.

Bluelime Retail Ltd

Bexley ambassador Bluelime Retail Ltd is a RIBA Chartered Architectural practice based in Thames Innovation Centre, Erith. They use advanced design software (AutoCAD Revit) which allows them to design in 3D and makes it much easier for their clients to visualise how their property will look when complete.

Industry:

Architecture

Background:

Bluelime was established by founder and MD Glenn Williams in 2006 to focus primarily on designing and project managing retail stores throughout the UK. Having been previously employed by Specsavers they became Bluelime’s first and biggest client and were responsible for adding over 100 stores to Specsavers portfolio. As the business grew Bluelime began to also focus on house design which was a natural progression due to Glenn's extensive experience in this market of over 20 years. Bluelime is now the fastest growing architectural practice in the region, covering the areas of Dartford, Bexley, Erith, Bromley, Blackheath, Greenwich, Lewisham, Dulwich. We expect to be completing 1 project every 2 days by year end.

Technology:

3D Design (AutoCAD Revit), Lumion

How has tech added value to your business?

Switching 7 designers from AutoCAD architecture to Revit was a major investment and learning curve for us last year. This along with our investment in state of the art online conferencing facilities and design suite allows us to share client drawings with them anywhere in the world and for them to interact with the designs in real time with their dedicated designer. This speeds up the design development process and improves communication massively.

We are now looking at 3D printing to determine if this is a technology our clients would benefit from. Using these technologies for what could be considered local, fairly small house extension and conversion schemes is unprecedented and we believe we are the only practice in the area to do it.

How do you see yourself growing and developing?

By year end (September 2018) we want to be on track to be the largest specialist house extension/conversion designer in South East London (completing 150 projects for the year). The 5 year plan is to cover all 33 London Boroughs. We have recently started a new brand ‘The Architects Of London’ specialising in the high end west London market. We now need to focus on more repeat business from developers and commercial clients. Also the Design and Build contracts is an area of growth for us.
